Welcome to the Department of Economics at NUI Galway. The Department is part of the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics.

The department has 20 full-time teaching staff, including 5 professors, who are also actively engaged in research. It has 9 full-time researchers and over 30 PhD students, who are funded from research grants won competitively by academic staff.

The intellectual vision fostered by the Department of Economics recognises that a flourishing academic environment is nourished best in a climate that integrates teaching and research, theory and empirical applications, in an integrated, policy-oriented and interdisciplinary way.

The department has approximately 1,800 undergraduate students of Economics across several colleges, but mainly in the College of Business, Public Policy and Law and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences. In addition to the more general undergraduate programmes, where students get a broad education before specialising at the postgraduate level, there are denominated undergraduate programmes in Financial Mathematics and Economics, Public and Social Policy, and Environment and Society. It has 70 postgraduate students across four postgraduate programme as well as over 30 PhD studets.
