Maintaining environmental quality and ensuring for the provision of ecosystem goods and services are critical for current and future well being. Economic tools and analysis can enable important insights into how to weigh the costs and benefits of public policies and private decisions. Economic methods can also provide important ways as to how to provide incentives and economic instruments to safeguard the environment in the support of sustainability. In considering environmental and resource topics ENRE researchers collaborate with colleagues in a number of other different disciplines on campus including, Geography, Earth and Ocean Sciences, Microbiology and Political Science and Sociology.

The principal objective of the Irish Centre for Rural Transformation and Sustainability (ICERTS) is to provide top class training in rural development, particularly at the PhD level; to provide funding for PhD students; and to carry out research, which deepens our understanding of rural society and underpins policies addressing critical issues in the transformations of rural communities and their sustainability.

ICERTS has been highly successful in winning research contracts from various funding agencies, in particular the European Commission Framework Programmes, The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Stimulus Programmes, the Higher Education Authority (HEA), PRTLI Programmes and Walsh PhD Fellowships funded by Teagasc.

ICERTS recently won a Beaufort Marine Research Award for socio-economic research in the Marine area Research Programme. ICERTS will link with RERC, the Rural Economy Research Centre at Teagasc, the Martin Ryan Marine Science Institute, NUI, Galway, and with the Marine Institute in the delivery of this research.

SEMRU was founded in 2008 through a commitment of €2m in funding from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food's Beaufort Award. SEMRU is a research unit within the Irish Centre for Rural Transformation and Sustainability (ICERTS). It is made up of a group of collaborating researchers, led by ICERTS, with staff drawn from a number of different NUI Galway departments including Economics, Marketing and Political Science and Sociology. The unit also has strong links with the Martin Ryan Institute, RERC, Teagasc and the Marine Institute. The unit has been established to underpin the development of the marine sector in Ireland as elaborated in the Marine Institute Sea Change strategy. As such, it contributes to the EU marine socioeconomic research agenda and strengthens marine research in general through providing a complementary socio-economic element in scientific projects. The unit also has responsibility for the training of researchers so that they contribute to continued marine economic research and to the transfer of tacit knowledge to the marine industry, thereby enhancing innovation and raising the competitiveness of the sector.
