M.A./M.Econ. Sc.
Economic and Environmental Modelling
[picture]

The M.A./M.Econ.Sc.: Economic and Environmental Modelling is an innovative programme for students interested in contributing to environmental policy and to sustainable long-term management of rural and urban resources. It combines an emphasis on quantitative modelling skills with an equal emphasis on the issues surrounding the development and implementation of policy in the areas of rural development, urban regeneration and environmental resource management.

The programme normally includes an internship in an appropriate research institute or development agency, which provides a practical forum where you can apply the theory and skills learned on the programme in a real-world environment.

Aims and objectives The programme aims to:
  • Develop the analytical modelling skills of graduates for future employment in the private and public sectors, in areas concerned with the environment
  • Produce graduates with an interdisciplinary background who have good analytic skills across all major areas of environmental and development economic, yet who are quantitatively highly competent
  • Deepen students’ knowledge of interactions between economy, society and environment

Why choose this programme? If you are interested in economics and would like a career in an environmental consultancy, in implementing urban regeneration policy, in rural development, in local or regional enterprise development, in key government departments, in international environmental or development agencies, in transport or waste management bodies, in energy consultancy, in planning, in land or forest or coastal area-management or in resource management generally, then the Master of Economic Science: Economic and Environmental Modelling is for you.

The internship in a research institute or development agency provides you an opportunity to apply the theory and skills learned on the programme in a practical environment.

The programme is taught by a team of highly-respected teachers and researchers at NUI Galway. Academics in the Department of Economics have many years experience of teaching and research in the area of environmental and resource economics.

Additional teaching on the programme is also carried out by active modellers in the Rural Economy Research Centre in Teagasc, a well-established, active research institute based near Galway. The link between the Department of Economics at NUI Galway and Teagasc brings to the programme the extensive skills and in-depth experience built up over many years in Teagasc, providing an invaluable resource for students that adds both immediacy and relevance to the policy aspects of the programme.

The M.A./Master of Economic Science can also be a stepping stone to a PhD programme - some of our graduates each year are likely to commence PhD studies in universities nationally and internationally.

Entry requirements Students admitted to the course will normally hold a primary degree with second class honours grade 1 or equivalent, which will have included the study of economics to intermediate level. Students who hold a Higher Diploma in Economics with second class honours, grade 1, or equivalent may also apply.

Advanced Econometrics
Local and Rural Development
Public Sector Economics

All of these options may not be available in any particular year. You also complete a three-month internship and a minor dissertation.

Check out the Current Students section of the web site for details on these courses.

What is the internship? You typically spend up to three months working in an appropriate environment, mainly in a research institute or development agency. You will be given assistance to find an appropriate internship arrangement, aiming to reflect your particular research interests and skills.

You are expected to complete a minor dissertation during your internship, on a topic approved by the Programme Board, which is usually linked to the research interests of your supervisor and the work of the placement agency. The internship allows you to develop important career links with regional, national and international organisations and institutions.

What are the employment options? As a graduate of this programme, you will be able to directly influence the formulation of corporate strategies and shape regulatory policy. You will be well equipped to pursue a career in an environmental consultancy, in implementing urban regeneration policy, in rural development, in local or regional enterprise development, in key government departments, in international environmental or development agencies, in transport or waste management bodies, in energy consultancy, in planning, in land or forest or coastal area-management or in resource management generally.

What they say about this programme The ability to develop applied environmental-economic models is a recommended skill for anyone interested in the dynamic interactions between factors such as economic growth, pollution abatement, natural resources and environmental policy. These skills are particularly useful if you want to be involved in the design of environmental policy for local, national or international research organisations, regional councils, multinational companies or private consultancies.
